15 regional organisations, one mission
The Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherung (Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds) supports the statutory health and long-term care insurance funds on medical and nursing issues under a statutory mandate. It is organised federally into 15 regional organisations. From 2017, we supported the MDK in migrating the websites of the individual organisations into an overarching, accessible platform in order to create more efficient structures.

One multisite platform instead of 15 websites
There are differences between the 15 MDKs, but the core mandate is the same for all – the same content had to be communicated online 15 times instead of once. The core challenge was therefore a unified multisite web platform that provides central content for all while still giving each MDK its own website for its own topics. On top of this came the integration of existing external databases as well as functions and content that in some cases existed only for individual state MDKs – on a platform that must always remain internally consistent and updatable.

Separate domains, a shared platform
In addition to the central website mdk.de, the sites of the individual state MDKs are each accessible under their own domain; visually and technically, they are integrated into one platform. In a federal country, this is a problem we encounter again and again and have already solved on several occasions.

Accessibility and a digital handbook
In spring 2020, we rebuilt the platform to a high standard of accessibility. To support the editors, we also created a digital handbook that can be continuously expanded.
